Ok, let's try a poll about exhibits: The question, which can be discussed here also, involves moral (?) and esthetical considerations regarding choosing which print to show in an exhibit, understanding that the print might be purchased and will then disappear from your portfolio, except as a different print of the same subject.
Say you have two prints of the same subject, Print 1 and Print 5. (Prints 2 thru 4 have either sold or been given away, if that matters at all.) Print 1 is your original print and is slightly better than any others that have been produced since. You really like it and you have used it since to try and recreate the same quality of image. Print 5 is a new copy of the same subject, but is slightly darker. Still really nice, but not quite as "popping" in terms of the subject matter contrast. No one observing the exhibit would notice, since they haven't seen both images side by side.
Would you put Print 1 or Print 5 into the exhibit? _________________ Mike Hoogendyk |

I would exhibit the print that I intend to sell, if indeed I plan to sell anything. If the "better" print is Print # 1, then that is the one I would exhibit. However, if for personal reasons, I am emotionally attached to Print # 1, then I would put the other Print # 5 up for exhibit/sale. If I have no intent to sell, but am only seeking complements and emotional strokes, then Print #1 goes in the show. _________________ Dwight is a Founding Member

I'm late to this discussion and so it might be moot, but if you really use print #1 as your guide print, to which you compare every subsequent print, you might consider designating #1 as an Artist's Proof and not making it for sale. That's sort of like Dwight's "emotional attachment" to a print, but more practical. _________________ Margaret Wright |
